Primitive Reflex Integration

Primitive reflex integration is a gentle, movement-based approach that supports the natural maturation of the nervous system. Reflex integration uses specific, purposeful movements to help the brain and body communicate more efficiently, allowing these early reflexes to integrate naturally and supporting more ease, balance, and confidence in a child’s development.

What Are Primitive Reflexes (And Why Do they Matter?)

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns present from birth that support early development. When these reflexes remain active beyond infancy, they can interfere with coordination, learning, emotional regulation, and everyday skills. An assessment helps identify whether retained reflexes may be contributing to your child’s challenges and provides a clear starting point for targeted support.

Common Primitive Reflexes and Possible Signs of Retention

A Gentle, Child-Led Approach to Assessment

Why Have my Child's Primitive Reflexes Assessed?

Retained reflexes can place extra demands on a child’s nervous system, making everyday tasks feel harder than they should. This can show up as difficulties with reading, writing, focus, self-regulation, or managing emotions. Addressing reflex integration can reduce these hidden stressors and support more efficient learning and behaviour.

Why Movement Is One of the Most Powerful Tools for Development?

Movement plays a vital role in how the brain and body communicate. Specific, gentle movements can help the nervous system mature and integrate retained reflexes naturally. By working with the body rather than against it, movement-based approaches support lasting changes in balance, attention, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

As the nervous system becomes more organised, many children experience improved body awareness, coordination, and emotional resilience. These changes can help children feel more capable and confident in their daily activities, both at home and at school.

What To Expect At Your Child's Assessment?

The assessment is calm, supportive, and carefully tailored to your child’s age and comfort level. It begins with a detailed consultation, followed by gentle movements, observations, and play-based activities that allow me to assess how your child’s nervous system is functioning.

Collaboration is at the heart of this work. The assessment is the first step in understanding your child’s unique nervous system and developmental needs. Parents are active partners in the process and will be supported with clear guidance and practical strategies to use at home. Your involvement plays a powerful role in your child’s progress, helping to reinforce changes in everyday life and create the best possible outcomes for your child.
